Fidget Room
For when you need to shut your mind off for a little while.
This is the room I use the most.
I go there when I'm bored, or waiting in the car, or when something upsetting just happened and I'm not ready to process it yet. Or maybe I don't need to process it, I just need to be somewhere else for a little while.
I play.
It sounds simple, and it is. But there's something specific about the kind of focus a simple game requires. It's just enough that you have to pay attention to what you're doing, and just enough to crowd out everything else. That specific level of engagement is the only thing that actually shuts the noise off for me.
And here's what I didn't realize at first. It's not just distraction. Playing creates enough space in your thought process to calm down and think rationally. You don't know that's happening while you're doing it. You just think you're playing. But when you come out, there's room in your head that wasn't there before.
Sometimes I play for a few minutes and sometimes I look up and an hour has passed. That's why I built timer prompts into the room. Just a gentle tap on the shoulder reminding me I have other things to do. I put them there because I know myself. I knew I'd get lost, and forget I need to drink water or I need to get up and do some things.
Fidget Room isn't about productivity. It's not about processing your feelings or building a skill or improving anything. It's just play. It keeps the hands busy, the mind quiet, and nowhere to be for a little while. For a lot of us, especially those of us whose brains don't get quiet easily, that is the decompression.
Bored in a waiting room, overwhelmed after a hard conversation. Sitting in a parking lot not ready to go inside. Or just quieting the mind. Fidget Room is for all of that.
